Happy Birthday Jedidiah!

Wow! I feel like we are running full speed ahead this time of year!

We recently celebrated Jed's 5th birthday!

I was able to snap a few pictures on his birthday before leaving for church. (why did I pose everyone in front of a tree that was just assembled and not decorated??? lol)

He chose a football theme this year. Actually, he chose a Texas Longhorn theme this year but since we are all Arkansas Razorback fans, I knew no one in the family would show up for a Longhorn party! lol

Our church, Community Outreach Ministries, along with the Jed Foundation adopted several families for Christmas. Jed had a great time delivering all the gifts.

Jed's visit with Santa!

(Santa looks alot like Daddy..or Daddy looks alot like him! lol)
The yarnworker club in our area passed out these cute little headwraps to all the kids. Jed loves this one!!! I get a big laugh every time he wears it.

Texas friends...how do you like his new birthday jacket? I just couldn't resist!

He was on his way to the bank to deposit his birthday money. Yes, he wore this into the bank. lol
The Christmas parties are already beginning here! We celebrated one of two parties at my parents home a couple of weeks ago.

Look how big baby Samuel is now!
My brother-n-law Kevin and sweet Kamry

Last week, I overheard my Mom fussing about my Dad getting her antique chairs out of the storage bldg and putting them in the yard. I hated to tell her, her grandkids built a fort in her yard and I am pretty sure the chairs were used as the furniture! Even with the pics to prove it, I don't think she would blame it on the grandkids! Poor Poppi!
I hope everyone is having a great holiday season!

Stay tuned for more pics of a cute little Christmas program at our church and an adorable long haired inn keeper!

God bless all of you precious readers and followers!

Buster

My blog is giving me fits! I have worked for hours and have only uploaded one picture! Hopefully, I will be able to give an update tomorrow.

Everything is great here in the Harper house.  Hope you are all enjoying this busy time of year!

I will leave you with the one picture that uploaded.  Santa came a little early!

Hello faithful blog readers. Life has sure been busy here at the Harper house. As always, I seem to find myself running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. We are gearing up tonight for Reagon's first Jr High basketball game of the season...and I can't wait!!! I mentioned in a previous post that Josh started a new church about 4 months ago and we have been busy with several missions. This time of year is my absolute favorite and Christmas is just around the corner. Now, that is hard to believe! Wasn't I just posting pics of tubing on the lake just a few days ago? WOW, this year is flying by!

Recently, Jed was asked to be a part of a Relay-for-Life float for the American Cancer Society. He had so much fun throwing out candy to all the kids lining the streets to see the parade. I have been asked to go through training for speaking on behalf of the ACS and I am so excited about that! Do you think they can teach this southern girl anything about speaking? They have their work cut out for them! lol

Of course, while at the fair, Jed HAD to stop by the animal barns.
We also had a family night recently at Chili's on their annual Childhood Cancer night. 100% of their profits (one set day a year) go to St Jude research hospital.
Thank you Chili's for supporting our kids! If every business did this..just for ONE day a year..think of all the money we could raise to fight childhood cancer.
November in my house means one thing to the boys.....deer hunting! Jed is all dressed up and ready for deer camp.
A daddy and his best buddy!  (please don't bother sending me emails about Jed and boys and guns and killing animals and animal cruelty and such. I get them every year when I post pics like this on my blog. We are from the south. We hunt. We kill deer. We eat deer. Sorry if that turns your stomach. lol)
Our church youth group is amazing! We spent one Sunday afternoon at the pumpkin patch. Jed is in the center of the pic, on the shoulders of one of our teen youth boys. The entire church spoils him and the youth kids are so good to help take care of him. We are blessed with a wonderful church family!
A few weeks ago, Curesearch held a walk in Little Rock, AR to raise money for Childhood cancer. We put together a team with some of the families at the clinic and called ourselves "The Rhabdo Warriors". The five kids at our clinic who are fighting or who have fought rhabdomyosarcoma were listed on the back of the shirts. Sadly, just days after the shirts were printed and just days before the walk, our sweet Maddie Lanway passed away. We wore buttons with her pic and walked in her memory.
 Team Morgan's shirts
During opening ceremonies, the names of the children who lost their battle with cancer (but won an earthly home in heaven) were read and balloons were released. The white balloons represented the children in heaven, the green balloons were the survivors. I pray that one day we will only see green balloons released in the sky.
At the end of the walk, a banner was waiting for the survivors to write on. I love how Jed's name and our Wednesday kids Madison Russell and Tanner signed near each other.
Our Rhabdo Heros.....Lillie Burton, Abby Hanway and Jedidiah.
After the Curesearch walk (where our team placed 2nd in fundraising!!!!), we were invited to the annual survivor family picnic. The picnic is held on a beautiful spot right alongside the lake where the kids and families get to spend time with the doctors and nurses outside of a hospital setting.  The food is catered, jumpy houses are set up, kids can get their faces painted, paddle boats are ready for families to use and no one is thinking about the hospital or chemo or blood transfusions. It's just a really great day with people who understand each other.

On Monday, Jed had another follow up visit for blood work and to have his port flushed. Readers of this blog frequently see Jed getting his port flushed but this is a new one...Jed flushed his own port. He thought that was a pretty cool thing! The nurses at ACH are amazing!
 My big and brave boy!
After our clinic visit, we made our rounds visiting our friends and passing out gifts from "Sharing Jed..The Jed Harper Foundation". Little Easton received one of the blankets we handed out that day (made by a sweet friend from church..thanks Missy!)
The foundation donated ladybug pillowpets to some of the patients in our unit. (Because of the patient privacy act, I covered her face....I don't know this child personally)
One of the greatest things about our 3 gold unit is the play area! It can be a lifesaver when you are stuck in the hospital for days and feel like the walls are closing in. The nurses take the kids to play and allow time for parents to eat or take showers or get a quick nap. The play area has a great outside area where kids can get a breath of fresh air and ride their trikes around outside near waterfalls and plants. The Sharing Jed Foundation was able to donate sets of ladybug solar lights for this area in memory of our sweet little ladybug Morgan Anderson
This is a picture of our adorable friend Easton riding in the outside play area on the Batman trike "Sharing Jed" donated in memory of our buddy Joel Smith.

The Sharing JED (Jesus Every Day) Foundation was set up by our family as a way to "give back" for all that was given to us while Jed fought cancer. Our needs were ALWAYS met and we never missed a meal, never missed a car payment, never worried about getting our girls to a ballgame or practice. It was amazing to see so many people come together and help us in our greatest time of need. But, over the course of our journey, we met with several families who did not have that blessing. We met families who ate out of the snack room because they couldn't afford a real meal from the cafeteria. We met families who lost their jobs, lost their homes, and couldn't afford to put gas in their vehicles all because of the horrible toll having a child with cancer takes on your finances. Josh and I vowed that after Jed finished his chemo treatments, we would focus on setting up a foundation in Jed's name. I have sooo much to say about this wonderful foundation but I am waiting on the launch of the website to introduce it all to you. I pray that it will touch your hearts like it has touched mine. So many people have already stepped up to be a part of this and already, many of Jed's friends and cancer families are being helped because of generous donations.

Sitting next to me on my desk is my "Thanksgiving list". My list of things to buy at the grocery store, clothes that need to be purchased, a reminder to charge my video camera, and so on. I started thinking about how I needed to make another Thanksgiving list of all the things God has blessed me with this past year. I scanned back at some pictures on the blog from 2007 before rhabdomyosarcoma became a common word in our family. I look at these picture taken on Thanksgiving Day 2007 and I think about all the changes that have taken place. Above Jed's head in his little highchair was a sticker that stated "Please don't share food with me..I am allergic to peanuts".  For weeks before, I remember wishing that Jed didn't have this allergy and feeling so sorry for myself and for him. Not knowing that something much bigger was going to enter our lives. Our family spent much of Thanksgiving 2007 on our knees in prayer.
That very Thanksgiving day, we kept our sweet niece Aubri because our family's world had just been flipped upside down. Aubri's sister, Ava had just hours before been diagnosed with leukemia. Our family was thrown into the scary, unfamiliar world of childhood cancer. Ava was only two years old. (Ava's mom is Josh's sister)
Ava finished her chemo treatments in February and just five short weeks later, Jed was diagnosed with cancer.

Today, I am thankful that the two beautiful children below are cancer survivors!!!!
and I am thankful for my blog readers, the world over, who have lifted up our family in prayer. God bless each and every one of you!

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men. Psalm 107: 19

Jesus wept

Hello to all you faithful readers. I am sorry it has been a while since my last update. We have been super busy with school starting back and a new church plus trying to get The Jed Foundation off the ground (more on that soon). I appreciate all the emails asking about our family.

We spent Labor Day with our families. I enjoy every minute we spend with them because it seems like we are so busy and we don't spend nearly enough time together.

Jed had so much fun playing with baby Samuel. He is growing up so fast! He is another miracle child in our family and is already spoiled!
Papa and two of his great grandkids enjoying the river. My Papa and Nana bought this property 30+ years ago and it holds so many memories for my family. Many, many birthday parties, family reunions, sleepovers, and cookouts have been held over the years along this river bank. It is a priceless piece of property!
Poppi showing Jedidiah how to wash his hair in the river! Lol
Of course, they had to jump off the rock and swing off the rope swing. The river was FREEZING but they managed to swim anyway!
Jed's face after his very first swing off the rope! A little daredevil!
Getting some loving from Nanny!
We enjoyed time at Memaw Goosey's house and celebrated her birthday! She is the glue that holds our family together and we love her so much!
Jed and Presli along with all the other grandkids/great grandkids always have fun at Memaw's house! They pulled out the sprinkler set and had a blast running through the yard.
We spent Monday of Labor Day with Josh's parents. The kids LOVE going to Nana and Poppa's house!

The pool was super cold but the two youngest talked Nana into swimming with them!
Nana was a good sport although I think she was freezing the entire time!

Our children are so blessed! They have wonderful grandparents who love them so much!
Last week Jedidiah went for his one year off treatment scans. Jed made a donation to the hospital in memory of his sweet friend, Joel. Now all the kids on 3Gold can ride the halls on a batman trike!
Jed is such a big boy and isn't nearly as scared as he used to be during scans. I wish I could say the same for Josh and myself.

Dr Stine checking out Jed. We have such a wonderful doctor.

Sweet Jedidiah was so still during his scan that he fell asleep.
This picture cracks me up. I am always telling Josh that he isn't the best photographer because every picture he takes is blurry. Here is my proof.  I want to thank you all for praying for Jaxon and ask you to continue to keep him in your prayers. He is fighting so hard and we were relieved to hear that some of the "tumors" in his lungs are in fact scar tissue! Keep praying!
Jed handed out 20 batman masks in clinic to all our little friends in memory of our own superhero Joel. All the kids loved them! This is Clay showing off his mask!
Even the employees wore a mask for Joel!
Jed and Maddie....two little miracles in our clinic! (We have 4 Maddies!!!) This is the Maddie that we met on the VERY first trip to the oncology clinic. For all you long time blog readers, I call her "the sparkle nail polish Maddie". Isn't she beautiful!
This past week we said goodbye to our precious Morgan. I don't know if a child has ever touched my heart like Morgan. She ALWAYS had a smile on her face no matter what she was going through. She would post on her facebook page "At ACH, having a super day!". You would have never known the battle she was fighting. She loved Jed so much and we loved her too. I can say without a doubt that she changed me for the better and I will NEVER forget her. She will always be a part of me and one of the biggest reasons for keeping the Jed Foundation going.
I tossed and turned and barely slept the night of Morgan's passing. At visitation on Sunday afternoon, I pulled up to the funeral home an hour early and the parking lot was packed. The very first people I noticed were families from our clinic who have also lost children to cancer. I hugged Joel's mom and Hannah's parents and got in the long line of people waiting to see Morgan's parents and pay their respects. As the line inched closer, I could feel my heart beating faster and faster and I had almost talked myself out of looking at her. I wanted to remember her with the big huge smile on her face. The bright eyed little girl that always took my camera in clinic and snapped a dozen pictures of all of us. She loved taking pictures and was just a ray of sunshine to all of us who knew her. I finally made my way to the front. Morgan looked as beautiful as I have ever seen her. She was dressed in a gold and ivory dress and her freckles literally glowed on her face! They almost looked 3-D! She was absolutely beautiful! I hugged her Mom and we cried together. I won't give details but it seems like the stories are all very similar. Cancer doesn't care that you are a small child. Most families watch their children suffer at the end. It seems so unfair and yet I am reminded that Morgan and all the other precious children who we have loved and let go are now safe in the arms of God.

I find myself getting more anxious at times, especially with the emotions of losing Joel and Morgan within weeks of each other. You form such a bond with the families at the clinic and you all feel like you are walking the journey hand in hand....then to look beside you and see that the family is no longer there almost rips your heart out.

There are times that I feel like Jed's story isn't as "fresh" on the minds of the prayer warriors as it used to be and I begin to panic a bit. Then God will remind me that He is still God and that He is still in control. Just a couple weeks ago during one of my nervous times, I received an email from a blog reader who was traveling with her friend from TX. I would like to share a bit from it...

"While we were in Boston, we were stopped by a handful of people asking if it was the same Jed as your blog. Isn't that great that thoughts and prayers are across the country. Thank you for allowing us to follow Jed's journey. He is awesome, and I could only hope to meet him and shake his hand one day. :) I can't wait to hear about the Jed foundation. I've worn my shirt sooo much it's starting to fade ... you wouldn't happen to have any more of them would you?"

Thank you Teralyn (on the right with her friend Judi)! Your email came at the perfect time and calmed this mother's heart.

I have been spending a lot of time lately reading the story of Lazarus. I don't know why but I seem to find myself drawn back to it each time I am in the word of God. I even changed up my Sunday school lesson for my teen class so we could study the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. I think my teens were a bit happy that day because the memory verse was an easy one. Jesus wept....

I have read the story numerous times but it is like a brand new story to me lately.  After leaving the clinic a couple of weeks ago, my sweet friend Carla (her daughter has leukemia) stopped me as we were walking out the hospital's main entrance. She was telling me about a mother that she and I have been witnessing to and had some good news about their talks concerning the Lord. This single mother lost her only child, a teenage daughter, a few months ago and has been struggling with her faith and walk with the Lord ever since. After we talked for a few minutes and we hugged goodbye, Carla said to me, "Doesn't this remind you of the story of Jesus raising Lazarus?"  I thought for a second or two and didn't quite see the similarities in the stories. She said "Jesus wept even though he knew he was about to resurrect Lazarus". One powerful sentence. We hugged and walked away to our separate vehicles in the hospital parking lot but I couldn't quit thinking about that sentence. I mulled it over in my head all the way home and for several days that followed.

Mary and Martha were friends with Jesus. They didn't just know of him or had heard about this great man, they were friends with the Savior. When Lazarus became ill and they sent word for Jesus to come, they had full faith that he was on his way and their brother was on his way to a great healing. But when Jesus didn't show up and Lazarus died the sisters were broken hearted and couldn't understand why their friend didn't come and save "the one he loved". When Jesus finally arrived the scriptures tell us "he groaned in his spirit" after seeing the two friends grieving. And what he did after that speaks volumes to me. Jesus wept. Did he not know what he was about to do? Didn't he know that Lazarus would soon come jumping out of the tomb still wrapped in burial cloth? Sure he did. But he cried anyway. He didn't just cry, he wept.

Jesus wept and had compassion on his friends. He knew what was about to happen. He knew that the grieving would soon turn to rejoicing but he cried along with his friends anyway.

I know that Morgan and Joel and DJ and all the other children that have impacted my life so much over the last year and half are in heaven with Jesus. When I sit at the side of a hospital bed and hold the hand of a mother who is preparing to say goodbye to a child, I weep. I know what is going to happen. I know that this child will soon be pain free and in the presence of our Lord and Saviour but I weep anyway. And Jesus understands it. I thank God for those two little words in His word. While most kids memorize them because it is the shortest verse in the bible, I remember them for a different reason now.

Someday soon, our mourning will turn to rejoicing and all the pains and cares of this world will vanish.

Psalms 30:5 "...weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."

Thank you blog readers! I can never tell you enough how much your faithful prayers mean to us!
